Let me start by saying that I have borrowed heavily from R.A. Torrey in this writing. In no way is this a completely original piece, although it does contain a good deal of original thoughts in it. But the ideas presented here were originally written by R.A. Torrey, and I have mulled over the ideas a great deal and presented my own thoughts with what Torrey wrote. So in all, the ratio of Torrey to me in this piece is approximately half and half. I felt it important to talk about some of the ideas he presented and meld them together because I found them extremely enlightening and inspiring. So, enough. Enjoy, and praise Jesus Christ Our Lord.
The person that says there is no God is a fool, because there is a God. Not only is this person a fool, but rather they are the fool of fools, the ultimate fool who believes in a great, blasphemous lie. As it is stated in Ps. 14:1, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.” Therefore a person whose life is without Christ, that life is a bad joke. He, or she, is a fool who believes God does not exist, and would rather dash away all logic and sense in favor of satisfying worldly desires and seeking paths to happiness that will only divert them further from the key to true happiness and lead them toward wretchedness.
And even more, why is the person who says there is no God a fool? The proofs that God does indeed exist are manifold and conclusive. Indeed, they around us at all times, if we will only look for them. We look to the things we have created in this world, and they are wonderful with their conformity to the laws of this world. But then we look at the plants, with so many mysteries regarding their operations that it boggles the mind the more we observe them. Growth and reproduction, and even the things that can only be seen under microscopes, it presents us with the dilemma of something we can try to imitate but cannot completely succeed in imitating. The animals possess their strange instincts and purposes, which somehow manage to work together in harmony. Finally we look at man, and the wonders of man’s intellect, morality, and spirituality and the wonder of the complexity of man’s entire body. All these things, they work far too well together to be simply left to chance. All signs point toward intelligent purpose. Everywhere we look, we find a universe of law and beauty, and in it there is purpose. As it says in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” and in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” From reading these verses, we can clearly see that the world around us itself tells us that there is a God. After all, every house has a designer. Common sense tells us that someone built it, and I would be a fool to suggest that the roof over my head at this time appeared by chance. There is a God, and there are an infinite number of chances in favor the existence of him, while there are many who would rather cast in favor of the one chance that the atoms of the universe somehow came from nowhere, that they themselves are somehow gods as they apparently are infinite, and these atoms somehow assumed their present associations in obedience with one another. But then again, with that belief, an atheist would not really be an atheist, but rather a pagan who worships infinite atoms as though they were gods. Therefore atheism is clearly illogical, and it is patently absurd. There is only one word for it, and that word is “fool.”
For a person to say in their heart that there is “no God”, and deny the existence of God because they do not wish to believe God exists, it shows them to be fools because there is a God, and it is great that there is. With the existence of God comes brightness and hope in the present that extends forever into the future for anyone who believes and accepts the gift of Christ. Without Christ, there is no hope, and we can never come to know happiness, and I do not mean just the momentary happiness of a person who has received a kiss from a loved one, or the momentary happiness of making a good deal of money, but I mean pure, unadulterated happiness, a happiness that does not fade with time, but always burns brightly. Those of you without Christ, ask yourselves, do you really feel happy as this moment? I doubt that many of you do. Who among all of us does not want to be happy? A masochist, perhaps, but even the masochist is happy in self-inflicted pain. But all of us seek happiness. I once sought happiness in so much sin of the world. I sought it in the form of women, and for years I did this, thinking the worldly love of a woman would bring great, inexpressible joy into my life. It did not, but rather it brought a feeling of wretchedness into me after I finally slept with a woman. I sought happiness through alcohol, and that brought only more misery. I sought happiness in the form of knowledge, seeking what I believed was knowledge yet was truly a set of hollow ideas that are less than a speck of dust in comparison to the knowledge a person comes to learn through Christ.
I tell you the truth, in all these things I was completely and utterly miserable. And there are few people who, in their similar searches, find happiness. Oh, they may think at some point they have found it, but they’ll still feel an emptiness inside them can no worldly thing can ever fill. What will fill them? The inexpressible joy of putting oneself in Christ’s hands for Christ to do what he will with them, rejoicing in the knowledge that all their sins are forgiven and then being freed from the slavery of sin. The Lord Jesus Christ told us in John 8:31, 32, that “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” How comforting these words are, that the teaching of Christ is the truth, and the truth will set us free. The truth is that he is the Savior, sent to us from the Father for the purpose of dying on the cross to wash away our sins with his perfect, righteous blood. Why would we not want to be free of this? It would be like a slave being released, but then saying “No, I want to remain a slave.” It is illogical.
I ask you, what intelligent person would choose to live in a world without God? I tell you the truth, behind their false veil of wisdom, they are fools. And the person that denies Our Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior is as much a fool. Anyone reading this who has not surrendered themselves to Christ, but instead still holds firm and says in their heart that there is no God, they are fools. They not only reject the aforementioned gifts in favor of their world desires, but they also reject eternal life. Think of it, eternal life. As it says in 1 John 2:17, “the world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” We already know that the ways of the world will not bring inexpressible joy to anyone. But we also know that we will not live by them for very long. So why continue living by them? Out of vanity? Forty years living as the biggest rock star in the world. A lifetime as a king. So what? It is nothing, less than a second in comparison to a life that has no end, and the glory with Christ is greater than any pathetic fame this world can muster to try to replace him with.
The only sensible thing to do then is to submit ourselves to the will of the Lord. Submit ourselves, and accept the one the Father sent to be our sin-bearer, the one sent to be our King. This is the key, and if we do it with sincerity and surrender absolutely to Jesus Christ we will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and there is no other joy comparable to being filled with the Holy Spirit. I lived for 22 years, not knowing what it was to be filled with the Holy Spirit, living a life as miserable as it could have been. Since I surrendered myself to Christ, and accepted God’s will, I have not known what it means to be miserable. There have been little things here and there, most of which would seem very significant to a person who has not accepted Christ, but to me they have been so insignificant with the knowledge that God is in control, and with Christ I am incredibly happy at all times. Does it matter that I am single? No, because I know the love of Christ is with me at all times, and it is greater than any earthly love can hope to be. Does it matter that I have little money? No, because I know the Lord will provide. In all situations, I am happy. You too can have this joy, if you accept Christ, but it is impossible to obtain without accepting Christ. If you have not yet allowed Christ into your heart, do not hesitate. Do not say tomorrow, because there may be no tomorrow. The time is now. Do it now, accept Christ, put your confidence in him, and rejoice.
