Black Belt Test
Posted On 08/30/2010 10:27:21 by redheadeddrummer

Our black belt test was held yesterday in Seoul. In Korea, TKD is a major operation: every weekend, officials test hundreds of athletes for their first dan black belt and beyond. The test itself is extremely short, not more than ten minutes. We demonstrated basic blocks and kicking, then performed poomses 1 and 8 and sparred for one minute. Because there was an odd number of women testing, I sparred twice. I made a stupid goof in poomse 8,  but sparred really well. I think I did-I hope I did- well. Master Cho will tell us the results next week. :-/

Damn, you're ambitious!

Mine was nominally in Taekwondo, but I learned later that my instructor had borrowed heavily from Japanese (where he lived for many years) martial arts. Getting a black belt took an average of four years from that group, although the minimum time was two years if you attended class 4 or more times per week. I trained for my 2nd Dan but never tested as I went off to med school.

What martial art is your black belt in? Mine is in Taekwondo. In Korea it takes only one year to earn, while other martial arts take a lot longer. Our teachers tell us that it's not until you earn your third or fourth dan black belt that your skills are on par with a first level black belt in Kung Fu and other styles.

Wow. My black belt test (in the US) was four hours long. It was just me and one other guy. I had to spar all the current black belts active at the school (eight I think and one at a time), but that was mostly ceremonial.
