It happens every year. A girl's day out of sorts arranged for my mother and her sisters, a chance to get out and have fun with the girls. When I was just a "wee lassie" I would follow along-or be pushed along in the cart to be more specific while they shopped and had fun.
My mother is a shorter than average woman with straight brown hair, green eyes and freckled skin. While my two oldest aunts-and the one's that accompanied my mother on these shopping days-were redheads. Not strawberry blondes, not brownish-red, very brightly colored redheaded women.
Needless to say, all the strangers who wanted to admire the brightly-colored red haired baby (me) would look straight to one of my aunts with their comments. This of course was quickly followed by my aunt explaining that I was her niece and my own mother to voice in and claim me, her little fire ball, as her own.
"Ahahaha! No, but seriously, you're baby has beautiful hair." the stranger would say again to my aunt, shrugging off the ridiculousness that my aunt, and not my true mother, could possibly not have birthed me- in all my redheadedness. This of course would lead my mother to again inject that I really was her baby sometimes two or three times, usually ending with the stranger leaving with a "what a bunch of liars" look on their face. Something my mother and aunts came to find very humorous.
After a few encounters of this type, I became adopted by my aunts, at least on those Girl's Days out so as not to confuse those admiring strangers who would not believe otherwise.
- This is a story my mother told me after I grew up a little and I find it very funny. Has anyone else had this type of situation happen with them?
