Animals Have Souls?
Posted On 06/10/2008 15:20:32 by hillaryperson

I feel as though maybe I have blogged this before.

Anyhoo, got in a discussion with mum today about this. We had just run some errands and stopped at The Animal House to play with their birds. And holy crap, there was this cockatoo there, and his name was Ollie, and he IMMEDIATELY stepped up on my sholder when I walked over to his cage, and would NOT for anything let me put him down. Broke my heart, it did.

SO! This is what the Bible has to say about the whole animal/soul thing:

LUKE 12:6

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God."

ECCLESIASTES 3:19-21

Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath, man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust and to dust all return.

You are entitled to your opinion, Frochy.

I quoted the Bible because many people who do not believe that animals have souls use it as an arguement.

more importantly is that we humans do have a soul but where is it going to hang out after this life is over?

Whether or not you believe the Bible,it has some interesting things to say about a variety of subjects. There is no human condition under the sun that the Bible doesn't speak on....quite simply,it is the most interesting book ever written. That being said,I don't believe utilizing animals for food is incompatible with believing they have souls....animals (who I believe have souls) utilize each other for food,no? And ,natural predators live concurrently with certain animal populations to ensure that some die off so there will be food enough for the others and the species will survive (ex. Man and deer) Also, like beavers chew down a lot of trees, but this creates wetlands for other species to thrive in.......I believe an intelligent Creator had a hand in this, but if you don't believe that you can be equally in awe of our eco-system and how it works out......also,let's not forget the story of Noah's ark---even if you believe it's allegorical, why would God command Noah to bring the animals if they were of no account?

Yep, you said it way better than I could have.

"Amen," (as it were), VL!

Well, Breezie, its one thing to kill an animal for pleasure and another to kill for food.

Animals eat other animals.  We're carnivors man.

I love most animals, but I'm a product of conditioning. I will eat a cow, even though I think it has a soul, because I was raised to see it as a food source. Conversely, I will not eat a dog, because it is a domesticated part of my household and dogs have always been pets.

But there are cultures who eat dogs, and I don't judge them. It's all a matter of culture and conditioning. I don't quite see it as a bias, nor as being "wrong." I see it as the way people are.

I'm probably the epitome of every "wrong" thing Breezie just pointed out, but again, I think it's just kind of how some people are. I'd never eat a cat, in any form, nor an elephant or a horse or a zebra.

Nor even a lamb.

Breeze....NICELY put.

The real question should be "Why are so many people so sympathetic towards pets?"

Really it boils down to affection for certain animals.  There is a bias and it's wrong.  All these so-called animal lovers call themselves that b/c they love their little fluffy dog or cat or bird or whatever domestic animal they can buy in a store.  And a lot of them are the same people who eat meat.

How could you eat a cow but all of the sudden the idea of eating a dog is immoral and the act itself is punishable by law, cited as "animal cruelty"?  Is it because the dog comes to you when you call it?  Now ask yourself... "Did the bacon burger I just ate soul?

I'm not really into philosophy but seems to me this is such a wrong position to put yourself in.

BTW, if you're a vegan and you chose to be a vegan b/c of religious or any other reason, then this certainly doesn't apply to you.

Tomorrow's topic, Hills, should be "What is a soul anyway?"

06/10/2008 16:55:34

I'm sure they have souls. As Littlered said, when you look in their eyes, it's there. It's there in the unconditional love, and I think, a deeper wisdom than we will ever know.

If you've never read it, find "The Rainbow Bridge", it's about where animals go when they die. Have a hanky handy!

06/10/2008 16:50:31

Animals do have souls, as Little has said if you were to look into their eyes then you see the same lifespark that you see when you look into the eyes of a human.

And Casper, Animals talk to us all the time, all you have to do is to stop and listen to them.

06/10/2008 16:46:25
Silly Burger. I think that of course people have souls, else we'd not mourn, laugh, play, love, care, be vindictive, get angry, hold grudges, forgive, etc.

And I do believe that animals have souls also and I concur with Casperino: just a matter of breaking the barrier.

But seriuosly: any animal that cares for its young, that mourns its dead, and that plays seems to me MUST have a soul.
