Political Correctness is bad!!

A recent post I made on another blog received some praise. It made me think more about the subject of being PC. I have also been working on my own personal website that will launch in a week or so. As content for my personal blog, I expanded on my thoughts about being PC. Here they are....( and there will probably a lot more posts about this same subject)....

Political Correctness is destroying the very fabric of our society. It is allowing for the proliferation of illegal immigration, the continuance of racism, moral corruption and the death of common sense to name a few things. Most importantly, it is killing free speech. Free speech is one of the core elements of a free and civilized society. In today’s culture, you had better think twice about saying ANYTHING that may or may not be or could be construed as offensive.

I always site this classic example when common sense and/or education are stomped on by Political Correctness.

Niggardly. Yep, I said it. I’ll say it again.... niggardly. How could I say that? Because it is a valid word that has NO offensive meaning. Here is the definition (from dictionary.com)

adjective1.reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly.2.meanly or ungenerously small or scanty: a niggardly tip to a waiter.–adverb3.in the manner of a niggardNiggard definition...–noun1.an excessively parsimonious, miserly, or stingy person–adjective2.niggardly; miserly; stingy.

See - absolutely NO relation to the word “Nigger” of which is a highly offensive word to the Black community (even though they use it ALL the time in rap music. Again, more political correctness going bad).

However, back in 1999, David Howard, a white aide of black mayor of Washington, D.C., Anthony A. Williams, correctly used the word in a meeting about a budget. Marshall Brown, a black colleague of David Howard, thought it was a racial slur and filed a complaint. The result was Howard tendering his resignation to the Mayor, and the mayor accepted it!

After much outcry, the Mayor offered Howard to come back to his position. He refused, but accepted another. Howard later made the following statement...

“ I used to think it would be great if we could all be colorblind. That’s naive, especially for a white person, because a white person can’t afford to be colorblind. They don't have to think about race every day. An African American does.

This whole situation puts a direct spotlight on being PC. One, Howard used the word correctly. Two, Brown was offended by no one but his own stupidity. The Mayor, also being stupid accepted Howard’s resignation and Howard was stupid for tendering it in the first place. Why did Howard not step forward and state nothing racist was said and for Brown to go get a dictionary? Why did the mayor not defend Howard? Was he ignorant of the word as well? Even the chairman of the NAACP defended Howard and seemed flabbergasted that people were offended. He is quoted as saying...

"You hate to think you have to censor your language to meet other people’s lack of understanding", he said. "David Howard should not have quit. Mayor Williams should bring him back — and order dictionaries issued to all staff who need them." "Seems to me the mayor has been niggardly in his judgment on the issue. [...] We have a hair-trigger sensibility, and I think that is particularly true of racial minorities."

You know what would have stopped all of this non-sense... COMMON SENSE and an "I am not special" attitude. Because a black man heard Niggardly and was unfamiliar with the word and interpreted it as “Niggerdly”, which is not even a word, and because Howard was too PC himself to stand up for himself AND because the Mayor too was PC, Howard quit. All of this could have been taken care of with a dictionary and a 15 minute meeting in the Human Resources Department. Instead, it played out in the history of American politics and even sparked a debate about the banning of the word!!

I for one am sick of all of this. I will not follow this crap. I will use the word niggardly. I will not use the term African American unless you were born in Africa and are now an American. If you are in this country without permission, then you are an illegal immigrant, period. If I enter your country without permission, I am an illegal immigrant. Oh hell, I could go on and on with the examples, but this blog would reach record lengths.

One last note before I get to my pledge... If you hear a word or phrase that offends you, ignore it. If someone wants to be an ignorant idiot, let them be that way. If it turns into a problematic issue where groups come together in the name of negativity, THAT is when you take it to the law or the public. And besides, it is a word, not a dagger, gun, knife, bomb or whatever. Cracker, nigger, white trash, red neck, kike, Spic, wetback, dego, dike, fag, spear chucker, whitey, the man, slope, kraut, russky, gook, yankee - whatever. Get Over It! It is offensive if you let it be.

Political Correctness has been sited as having roots in Marxism. I encourage you to do more research on this movement and understand why being Politically Correct instead of just using common sense and being a decent human is bad for all peoples.

My Pledge to society:

1) I will not lead my life worrying about the possibility of offending others.

2) I promise you that you will be offended by something I have said or done or will say or do at some point.

3) I promise that at one point in my life I will offend someone regarding race, religion, color and/or creed.

4) I promise that I will not always see your point of view and that I reserve the right to disagree with you at any point, wholeheartedly.

5) I promise that if you find me offensive, I will not loose any sleep over it.

6) I promise that I will not purposely set out to offend anyone.

7) I promise to do my part in advancing all civilization with the best of intentions. If you are offended in the process, too bad. Get over it.

8) I promise to do my part to end Political Correctness and make people realize that they are not "special". You are one of 6.7 Billion people on the planet. The world cannot cater to all your emotions needs.

Potentially Yours Offensively,

Raphael

I'm staying out of this one! Lol. No more internet fighting for ME! However, I agree with Raph and I think the point of this blog was, if you're offended, fish off... So why keep persisting?

If black has no derogatory inflection, then why do black American's now insist that they be called African Americans?  I am not walking around asking to be called Irish / Italian / English / German American.

The term used for cigarettes is fag, not faggot.  Again, two totally different meanings.  And that term is still used in Brittan to this day openly and by homosexuals.

The whole point of my original post was people need to start using common sense and not political correctness. Using common sense, am I going to say Faggot is acceptable to use as a label for a homosexual?  Of course not.  But a similar word, faggotting, that word is used validly in metal work and knitting and has been in use for centuries prior to faggot becoming a negative label towards homosexuals, specifically gay men and specifically in the US first ( I believe it's origins may have something to do with the term faggot being used towards women long ago and gay men being effeminate).  Should we preface knitting manuals with "step 3.  Before, and this next word is not meant to offend, faggotting your stitch....".   Is someone going to snicker at that  - probably.  Will someone be offended by that, sadly, probably yes.

If want to call my views and my efforts to bring this to the table as intellectually lazy, that is your right.

However, what is more intellectually lazy.....claiming racism about the use of a word that has no racist meaning or connotation and making a spectacle of your ignorance while dragging the name of a decent person through the mud along with you AND while in the process NOT learning why you were wrong?  Or in a situation like this pointing out how ridiculous it is and why it should not be offensive?

There are some people that are not going to want to "work" with you on issues like this.  That is why I will not live my life worrying about the possibility of offending someone.  No matter how well you live your life and how careful you live it, you (and this time I mean literally you) will offend someone.  If you do, you try to understand why as I have stated before.  And if it is over something as moronic as the aforementioned story, why would you waste your time trying to correct a wrong that never happened?  "Sorry if you were offended by what I said, but those words have no offensive meaning. May I offer you a dictionary?"

Should the Spanish no longer use Negro?  Negro is black in Spanish (you may have already known that).  Will someone be offended hearing that word - of course.  Someone with out the slightest bit of common sense would be.

It has nothing to do with god given rights, swagger or having a bad-boy hard on as I think you put it- it is called common sense, fact and intelligence. (As a side note, I love it when people resolve to rebuttals with name calling).

You are not going to see my point of view on this.  That is clear, and I am ok with that.

I wish you the best of luck in the future.  It looks like you are looking for a job in economics, you should try networking on Linkedin.com if you have not already done so.

"Hey, take a look at this....um  I am about to use a word to describe the color of this car and I don't mean it in a racial way, black car"."

"black" has no derogative history to it. doesn't apply.

"Similarly, if a black person asks a white waiter or waitress for crackers with their soup, I would not expect the waiter or waitress to be offended or interpret it as being racist.

Should Spic and Span change their name because it could possibly be offensive to Mexicans or Latino's?"

These arguments miss the mark. You're parsing ideas with a hammer, rather than a needle. More intellectual laziness in service of your god-given freedoms, right?.

Spic and Span was around long before the word applied to hispanics. Now, if P&G came out with a cleaning product called "good little spic" I think we'd have a problem. It's context man. It takes thought.  Case-by-case analysis, not just some swagger and a pledge to say whatever the fish whenever the fish.

However, niggardly is a bad example, because as you say, it is not the same. It is however, similar enough, and anachronistic enough that when someone uses it, ears prick.

You heard that didn't you?  No, of course I wasn't calling you a prick!

But here's a better analogy.  You meet a gay man. He lights a smoke, and the burning tip brushes against your clothes.  "Hey, you just burned me with your.... faggot." Interesting choice of words. Anachronistic and, sorry -- I can't resist the pun -- incendiary. Can you say it?  Sure! Will that faggot kick your ass?  Probably! Audience, my friend.

The more they are used in a civilized manner, the more power they loose. Have discussions with people.  Start debates such as this. Not doing so is dumb and being PC.  "Oh, I cannot talk about that word, that would not be politically correct for me to do so because blah blah blah".

If you're getting from my arguments that these words should not be spoken, you're wasting both of our time yelling and not reading carefully.

Have discussions with people.  Start debates such as this.

I guess you're getting my point after all! Like I said: preface your inflammatory language with warnings, open the channels of communication, show people you are working with them.  That is discussion.

You want help out of the hell of words?  Then SAY THEM.

No matter how many times you point at a rooster and say "I love coke" people are still gonna laugh at you. No matter how many times you say nigger, you're not going to earn a black person's trust.

To make it clear - I am not calling you stupid.

I am not really sure that you are comprehending the point.

Why would I need to preface the use of the word niggardly and explain the context????  THE WORD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE AND IT IS NOT OFFENSIVE.  Because it "sounds like" nigger that means it must be racist?  That's like saying I should preface the use of the word black whenever using it in any situation.  "Hey, take a look at this....um  I am about to use a word to describe the color of this car and I don't mean it in a racial way, black car".  Come on? Are you Serious??  That is just stupid AND it is being PC.

And you would have to be a total idiot to tell your child that Pussy is slang for vagina.  I certainly do not see your point with that reference.

You want help out of the hell of words?  Then SAY THEM.  The more they are used in a civilized manner, the more power they loose. Have discussions with people.  Start debates such as this. Not doing so is dumb and being PC.  "Oh, I cannot talk about that word, that would not be politically correct for me to do so because blah blah blah".
