Hurting a friend by helping
Posted On 05/19/2011 10:18:34 by Magdellena

My friend Alison is a gorgeous creature. Once upon time I would have killed to look like her. She is tall, svelt, with long legs, tan skin, blue eyes, blond hair. She is the kind of woman I feel like an alien standing next to... me being short, curvy, pale as Death's sister with dark green eyes and flaming red hair. It's like we're not even the same species and men have nearly always backed up this feeling for me. When the two of us have had a girl's night out, men flock towards her..... and the men that so much as speak to me when I'm with her only do so in an effort to find out more about her.

"Is your friend single?"  "What's your friend's name?"  "How long have you known her?" "Could you put in a good word for me?"  etc, etc, etc.

Ali never stays single for long. She goes through boys like no one I've ever seen. They never seem to last.  You see Ali just about always goes for style over substance. She likes guys who are handsome and about as sharp as a bag of rocks. The relationships (if you can call them that) never last more than a few months at the most.

For all the assumptions made about Ali from her looks, she is a brilliant business woman. She runs her own business and is a star at it. She is an event coordinator and she's really good at what she does. Personality wise, she's as sweet and kind and fun as the day I met her oh so many years ago as a teenager... though she can be a little naive in the sense that she truly expects the best from people, cynical is not a state of being she understands. It is usually refreshing to be around someone so positive... other times it's frustrating as all hell.

Her most recent relationship, I have to say, it shocked me. She had told me about Paul. This alone let me know something was different becuase she usually only vaguely mentions her "new boy" to me once or twice before they are gone. She'd never before spent an entire evening talking about one and he sounded... not like her type at all. This is not a bad thing, in fact it brought me hope. When she insisted that I met him I knew this was serious.

He is handsome enough, intelligent, sarcastic,  with a dark sense of humor and an ego the size of all outdoors. To a degree I rather liked him. He was certainly entertaining. Ali seemed over the moon with joy. I had never seen her so serious with anyone before. She was all but glowing as she sat next to him, smiling and chattering away. When he had to leave and she and I stayed to chat a bit longer she even bemoaned the fact their work schedules mean they don't get to see each other as often as she would like. I had never, ever heard Ali complain about not seeing a bloke enough. NEVER. What could I say? I gave the whole affair my blessing.

Fast forward nearly a year. Here is where the issue popped up. He has a girlfriend, has had a girlfriend for four years now. How do I know this? I met her. She is a friend of a friend, as they say. Girlfriend doesn't know about Ali, Ali doesn't know about girlfriend.GF is a great lass. In any other circumstance I'd love to get to know her better. She and I actually have a lot in common. I can't fault her. She's great.

I don't know what to do. This is the longest relationship Alison has ever had in her entire life. Before Paul her longest was 6 months. She is madly in love with Paul. This would kill her! For all her party girl attitude to things she has never cheated on any of her partners. She's all about being with one person at a time. This is a major issue for her and always has been because she has been cheated on before. I haven't had a chance to see Ali since I met Paul's GF. We won't be able to get together again till her birthday next month. I don't want to tell her this over the phone, she will not take it well but I can't NOT tell her...

I don't know what to do...

I have to completely agree with Darkest Red. I think honesty is probably the best. I have to agree if the situation was reversed and my friend didn't tell me that she knew my boyfriend was cheating on me, I would be pissed. Then again, it was my "best" friend in the first place that was screwing my last boyfriend. Yep, I think you should just tell her.

Personally, in these situations I think it's always best that you're just honest.  Sure, she probably won't want to hear it and the whole "shoot the messenger" thing will probably come into play, but regardless of the consequences, it is better that she knows.  No girl needs a man like that in her life.  Being with him will mean she's selling herself short and could potentially be missing out on meeting a guy who will actually give her the respect she deserves.
If I was with a guy who was cheating on me, I would definitely want to know...and if I found out that a friend of mine knew about it and didn't tell me, well, I'd seriously be considering if they were really a friend at all.

That's my 2 cents, anyhow.

Ouch that is a damned if you do and damed if you don't situation. I think in the end she will probably respect you more if you told her. I have been in that type of situation before and my friend was pissed because I didn't tell her. I told her that I didn't think it was my place to tell her, but it killed me knowing that I knew he was a cheat and a snake in the grass.

Back to your situation, the man is and always will be a cheat. That is terrible and I have been where she was at. I was married to a man for 11 years that cheated on me 3 times that I know of. I loved him, and I was not inocent in the relationship as we had our issues, BUT I didn't cheat. She is going to be devastated, but I think you should tell her.

Best of luck on the whole situation, keep us informed.
