I don't often do this, but I'm going to continue on from my last post about juding people by their looks..
As you may know, it was my birthday recently - and if you didn't know, it's not to late to send me cake! I returned to work last Tuesday and received a present and card from my colleagues, which was lovely. I was speaking to one of the guys, Shane, and he mentioned that he had suggested they get me a bottle of Jack Daniels for my present and NO ONE believed that I'd drink JD! Now, I know I don't exactly look like
Lemmy - and as awesome as he is, I am glad about that - and I am probably not what most people think of when they think of JD drinkers, but I don't think the idea that I would drink JD could be THAT impossible for no one in the team to believe him! When he mentioned it to the girl who was in charge of getting the present, she said she thought he was joking.
A few years ago, my sister shared a house with a journalist for a local newspaper. I was staying at my sister's and I got talking with my her housemate about music. He was really surprised when he found out that I was into rock and metal. Apparently he assumed I would be into boy bands and poppy crap. I was insulted!
So is it human nature to make presumptions about people because of their looks? I am inclined to say it is. And perhaps sometimes it is reasonable to assume that, say, someone likes a particular genre of music because of the way they dress. Iron Maiden t shirt on, for instance, and you can reasonably safely assume they like metal!
But how far do we go with this? There was a time when people thought they could tell a criminal by the size of a person's head. Nowadays we would laugh that off straight away but there are still plenty of people who think they can tell an awful lot about a person just by their looks. My previously mentioned friend, Dan, and I were talking about the friend who kissed me - who Dan has never met - and Dan wanted me to link him to the other friend's facebook page so he could decide what kind of guy he was from his photos, which is, frankly, ridiculous. It is all so easy to make a judgement based on what someone looks like, or how they act, but until you really get to know that person, it is purely speculation. For instance, I have been to many metal gigs and, despite a reputation to the contrary, I have found metalheads to be some of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of being at a gig with. I have also been to folk gigs, and found them to be some of the rudest and most annoying.
This is one of those times when I had plenty more to say but can't for the life of me remember what, so I will end now but I may well expand on this more if my brain decides to function properly!
