I swear the only crowd denser than the sidewalks in Broadway here today was the pit at the Melvins/Tool concert in '97. We walked all over this city again today, much of it this time, I am ashamed to admit, just to look for an Urban Outfitters so a girl could spend her Christmas Money. The things we do for spendlust... (says the pot) And once that was achieved we took the train down to 50th and then after a Starbucks refresher went back up to 53rd for the Lucien Freud etchings exhibit at the MOMA (which rocked) and then we walked the 10 blocks back to the hotel (the ladies agreeing only after I promised that we could order in chinese). But at 46th the police were taping off a block of Broadway. It was like the Hoover dam the sea of people crushing up against the yellow tape and police ego. "What's the deal, whats the deal?" No one knew. There's a stage in the middle of the street is maybe somebody gonna perform? Maybe it's Brangelina (they're actually in New Orleans). Maybe it's Jessica Simpson. I was on Rodeo drive once and there was a crowd outside Prada and me and the ladies went in the alley behind it and out popped Jessica Simpson and waved at us from her Rover as she drove away. "Hi Guyssss!!!" We stood for a minute but the prospect that we could wait for hours and never see anything soured us and we had already seen Jessica so we backed out through the crush and cut through a blocklong building and came out on 45th. There was a cop there at the barricade and he was explaining to someone and I went up and asked them and they said "suspicious package." Such is the hype and paranoia of New Years eve eve eve 2007 in Time's Square New York City.
