a year ago i went to auschwitz, the notorious nazi death camp, as a government initiative to bring messsages of tolerance to the community. the experience was obviously horrifying, the scale and brutality of it all is indescibable.

today i went to a follow up semina...the empathis was on reflecting on what had happened they talked about ensureing people remembered what happened....which is very importaint. however, i couldn't help but think we should focus on whats happening NOW. places like Darfur and kenya, even guantanamo bay...isnt it hypocritical to look at the jewish holocaust and say 'oh it was terrible' and ignor the genocides thats happening right now!?!?humans are nasty terrible things and there will always be racism and genocides, but sitting back and letting them happen without doing anything...most people dont even know about the genocide in darfur (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/5316306.stm thisis a good article which gives a summery)....gggrrrr it makes me angry and upset....

i will stop ranting now....

clooney and pitt and cheadle have done worlds for darfur and katrina and the like, just by lending their celebrity but nothing can stay in the new long these days.

not with shi.tney spears freaking out every other day.

but you make a really good point. the whole POINT of history (the study of it, that is) is to learn from our mistakes, see what went wrong, REALIZE what went wrong, and avoid the same mistakes.

the thing is though, everyone's history is different, and you even have morons who say deathcamps never happened.

so honestly? rant ON, girl, because it's sometimes the only thing we can do and it DOES bring the attention back to it, and that's always a postive thing.

great freaking blog by the way. sorry i'm all no-caps and run-on sentency, i'm really sleepy

You are absolutely right! The media doesn't show stuff they aren't interested in. If the white anglo-saxon protestants don't have an affinity for, or a comraderie with, a group... it is ignored. They won't pay a reporter to cover it even if they found one to volunteer. The schools don't train us on their politics or histories and we don't know which side is doing what to the other side... Aaahh....Very frustrating.
