So after planting the new bed last week, I turned my attention to turning a patch of concrete by the side of my garage into a flower bed. Now by now you should realise I tend to shy away from the easy jobs (strong massochistic streak) so I attacked this patch of paving slab and concrete with a gusto.
And it attacked me back.
The paving slabs are original, and whoever made then knew how to pour concrete - they were twice as thick, and twice as heavy as anything you can get from any hardware store, these days. I'm just so glad they wern't Welsh slate - or granite. Anyway, each slab needed several passes with an angle grinder before they were cut - and I still needed to use a jack hammer to break them up to lift them.
The concrete itself was easy, I don't think that the person who put that in (me) knew what he was doing as three minutes with a jack hammer with a breaker bar saw to that. lifting it proved trickey, as I discovered that same numpty had laid the concrete over the old power supply for the garage (oops)
Nasty moment, there, until I remembered that it had been disconnected years back. So I started to dig out the gravel from the new bed - until I hit more concrete - about 15 years ago, we split the garden in two, flowers, dogs people at one end and fruit and vegetables at the other (that and the fact that we had a rather large German Shepherd prowling the garden and for some reason she frightened visitors.
Anyway, I digress. Out with the jack hammer and breaker bar again. I managed to remove most of it, but hit a soft patch of concrete which the breaker bar decided to dissapear into - so that's got to be dug out.
So, today I have a whole fresh bunch of aches and pains, as well as several cuts and grazes from lifting concrete.
Oh happy days.
Oh, one more thing, This morning while on flashchat with the usual suspects, I had a knock on the door, Postman was delivering more plants.
Yet more work to do.
