I "tan" quite often...okay so I burn even when I use sunscreen and I have freckles show up in places that they shouldn't be...but still. lol I use 45 spf a lot and I still turn a lil pink after just two hours of being in the sun, but it does make my skin that is around the freckles not so casper looking. lol You will get freckles even still though...no way around it. Certainly don't go hitting a tanning bed naked...just sayin'.

"A face without freckles is like a night without stars!" IMHO, freckles are fantastic; I'm torn whether I fancy freckled or all-pale more, but most redheads with an even tan just don't look quite right to me. I gather "bluey" is an affectionate term for Reds down in Oz, likely due to the "skin so pale it's almost blue", and I am a bit fond of seeing a glimpse of veins under nearly-translucent pale skin... [Sigh] Gotta go get a napkin to wipe up this drool now... :^b~

I already said it.... freckles are a concentration of melatonin on certain parts of your skin, acquired at birth. If you have freckles, they are always there. Staying away from the sun makes them lighter (sometimes to the point where you can barely see them), and exposure to the sun makes them darker.

umm sorry, but i'm pretty sure freckles is the result of our skin trying to tan. its just the pigment, we are fair skinned, we generally cant tan and we are lucky if we can but when the tan faids and it will, freckles will be there, so generally freckling is our own special and unique way of tanning.

umm, you will generally start to burn after 10 minutes of being in the sun, so when you apply sun screen it need to be on 1/2 and hour before you go in the sun, so it can activate, cheack how long it lasts for so you can re-apply 1/2 an hour before it runs out so you are not exposed to the sun for the 1/2 an hour its reactivating, you must keep this up until you are out of the sun. let me no how it goes if its not to much trouble, it works for me, and i only no because i did a short course in cosmetics. have fun, catch

Perhaps I wasn't as thorough in my explanation.
Some people are more susceptable to having freckles than others. Some freckles are a result of tanning, but you can't go from looking like Powder to looking like Lindsay Lohan just by being in the sun a few days. I was born with freckles (like many people) and when I go out in the sun, they get darker.... though they don't fade completely when I avoid the sun.
Keep in mind that sun spots look just like freckles, though they don't fade at all.
Wikipedia has a nice article on it.

Freckles are a mystery. When I was young I had them everywhere. If I just thought about going outside my face was cover in seconds. Then one day I woke up and they were mostly gone. None on my face, some on my arms and that is it. Tanning, can be done. it takes a while but you can do it if that is what you really want. Go to a good Tanning Salon start in their regular beds for 5 mins twice a week for 2 weeks. Then move up to three days a week for two weeks. Then a jump up to 8 mins still in regular bed for three times a week. After you can stay in the bed for a full 15 mins you can move up to a super bed. If you are in super bed then only tan twice weekly. For me if I was going to the beach and didn't want to burn then I would start tanning in March and by May I was able to stay on the beach all day.....of course with 50 sunscreen.....lol And yes I did get tan, pretty darn dark.
