How would you define a real readhead? My grandma was a redhead, she has 6 children and two of them are readheads. My mom's a mixture, some red hair, some dark blond hair. I've got blue eyes, bright white skin, tons of freckles and my hair was Irish red when I was a child. When I grew up I lost most of the red hair. I don't know why. Now my hair is a mixture of dark blond and copper-blond. More copper in summer, darker in fall. I dye my hair natural red (no cherry), because I like it and seems to me natural. But, what am I? And why did I lost the red hair?

My kids were all born redheads as well. My daughter is mostly blond now. If you really look she has a hint of strawberry in it. My son was born with a auburn color and he is now mostly blond as well. My youngest on the other hand has RED hair! I would probably consider you to have red hair. First of all if you once had it, you carry the gene....therefore you can make more redheads!!!

I agree, if you were once redheaded, you still are. Sorry you lost the color; hair can change, but like Brandi said, you carry the gene.

Also men who have red beards are technically considered redheads.

there are seven observable physical traits that define qualification as a "real red head" and the color of the hair on your head is only one of them..so if you have all the others and it sounds like you might plus the fact that youve had red kiddos I'd say its a done deal......and I have to disagree bigtime with rockofgod about it being a state of mind...IT IS NOT.....reds who dye their hair because it faded or something over time fine...still and always redheads...but those who dye it just to be like a red without the other physical features to go with it....are fakers and usurpers in my view...same goes for them that try to emulate the "Red attitude".....immitation is a nice flattery but the real deal is still and always will be the best!!!

My step bro's mom was a redhead, he has red facial hair, but dirty dish water blonde... So what does that make him? He's always just considered himself blonde.... My half sister was born with bright redhair and shortly there after she became quite very blonde, but as of late it almost seems to be getting darker and possibly even turning red.... So if she turns red what is she? My father has dark brown / black hair and my mom's genes still produced me, a complete redhead... But as I get older its getting darker.... So if it turns brown one day, am I no longer a redhead? Hmmm questions questions.....

VERY STRICTLY AND LOGICALLY SPEAKING: someone who has 'red' (just what is and is not 'red' hair is better left for some other thread) hair somewhere on their HEAD. So under this strict definition, someone with no red-component whatsoever in their scalp and/or facial hair but with red hair somewhere else on their body would not logically 'qualify' as a redhead, lol. ;-) In a less strict sense, a "real redhead" is someone who is 'phenotypically red haired;' or in other words, someone who has 'red looking hair' (in one of the generally accepted shades of 'red') that is rooted (no pun intended, lol ;-D ) in their personal DNA/genetics. This is not the case with an 'unreal-' or 'bottle redhead.' But, this said, it IS possible for 'dyed redheads' to be 'carriers' for red hair by genotype; meaning, that they genetically descend from red haired (and 'frecklers,' i.e., persons with freckle-capable skin) ancestors and have the potential to procreate red haired offspring/children. Of course, most persons with natural red hair are both phenotypical and genotypical 'redheads.'

What you state here is very normal/typical for redheads in general; because when it comes to extended families the '100% red haired family' is practically non-existent. When it comes to your family, specifically, y'all definitely have a 'red strain' going, gentically speaking. =)

Nattfari wrote:

Most redheads have blue eyes and, of course, 'bright' or 'pale' skin. Since you have FRECKLES you have 1/2 of the overall 'pale-AND-red genetic coin,' so to speak. ;-) For most folks, freckles and red hair are genetically 'bound' or opposite sides of the same 'genetic coin;' so if you have one trait by phenotype ('shown-trait'), then you have the OTHER trait too even if only under the 'surface' or by genotype. Also, since you say you have TONS of freckles, that speaks VOLUMES about you genetically too; meaning, that the odds are probably HIGH that you could have red haired children hinging in part on the DNA of the person you procreate with.

I've never heard the phrase 'Irish red' in reference to a shade of red...I guess you mean you had 'flaming' or 'intensely red' hair as a child...I need to commit this shade description to memory! lol. ;-D Since you apparently had intensely red hair as a child AND are now heavily freckled, then you are probably a carrier for 2 red-related alleles of the MC1R gene...I won't bore you with a genetic discussion of this though, lol. ;-D If you describe having a 'copper' component to your hair now, as an adult, then it seems to me that you still qualify as a 'redhead' at least to a minimal degree--such things are matters of OPINION varying from person to person anyway.

Nattfari wrote:

Pale/freckled persons can always 'pull off' dying red and to the vast majority of persons walking the streets such persons look naturally red haired. But in your case, you HAD red hair in the past and seemingly STILL carry a natural red-component to your other blonde; so it seems to me you have/are merely ENHANCING what's left of your red hair to appear more red-looking. In your case and IMO, not only does it 'seem' natural it IS! natural. =)

Nattfari wrote:
But, what am I? And why did I lost the red hair?
IMO, you are STILL a redhead in a phenotypical sense (minimally) and ABSOLUTELY! a carrier for red hair genotypically

As for loosing red hair or any other hair color, THAT'S JUST LIFE! ;-D We ALL CHANGE physically in so many senses over time, very much including pigmentation too, Some 'gifted' redheads 100% naturally maintain their flaming-red or 'orange-red' locks RIGHT UP until they start to LOOSE IT ALL due to ageing and the emergence of white (or what most folks call 'gray') hair. So, don't feel bad about it, sweetheart, because EVERY SINGLE REDHEAD on this site is going to loose their ruddy colors ULTIMATELY either by seniority or death...as the French say "C'est la Vie." =D
