Obamacare Observations
Posted On 07/21/2009 21:38:10 by Drowned_Phoenician

I decided that I will begin this post similarly to my prior post on government authority because the core principles remain consistent.  I make some important points here, and I encourage anyone who considers themselves a politically involved person to read whenever there is time.

"Short Version of the Post"

Dear government:

History tends to indicate that you break everything you put your hands on.  I am so glad that the founders of this country realized that you are a virus that erodes human liberty, prevents progress, and destroys individuality.  You do not own the individuals of this country.  We own you.  We do not need you to make decisions for us, and we do not need you to tell us what is best.  Do me a favor, and stay the hell out of my life.

Sincerely,
Jay

"Long Version of the Post"

The health care issue is stalling for Obama.  He is beginning to face opposition from all sides, and even some Democrats in Congress are defecting on the issue.  The Democrats got together and drafted another 1000+ page load of crap labeled health care reform.  Obama has been lobbying it day and night, but it doesn't seem to be helping.  I wonder why all of the sudden that people are opposed to an Obama policy.  Maybe it's the fact that this piece of legislation possibly is the first bill of his administration that has actualy been debated.

"The House bill adds $239 billion to the federal deficit during the first 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. It would pummel small businesses with an 8 percent payroll penalty. It would jack America’s top tax rate above those in Italy and France. Top earners in New York and California would be giving more than 55 percent of earnings to one government entity or another."    ---  David Brooks, Op-Ed writer for New York Times

Also included in the bill are mandates that would impose a $2500 fine for citizens who do not want to currently buy a health care plan.  If they don't want to, make 'em!  That seems to be the modus operandi of the Obama administration as of late.

Apart from the nightmare that is Obamacare, there is the basic principle at hand.  It is shocking to me that we now live in a country in which the whole of an entire political party supports government intrusion into every American life by way of health care.  There is a segment of the American population that has become utterly gutless and totally dependent.  The Democrats tell people their entire lives that if they can't make it in life, don't worry... we'll take care of it!  The idea sounds swell on paper, but decades have eclipsed and produced a pathetic and growing welfare state.  The system is one that facilitates laziness and nearly encourages underachievement.

I know what you Obama cult members are thinking right now.  Good God, you heartless beast of a human being!  All Obama wants to do is give health care coverage to poor people.  All we want is for every person to have health care, don't you see that, you fool?.....  Yes, I know I know.  Just like with every issue with liberals nowadays....  emotion holds the gavel in hand, and rationality is often the defendant.  Nevermind the consequences of a particular action.  Only worry about the good intentions.

I am here to offer you quality points to think about as this business is parsed by the news media.  Most estimates say that there are around 45 million Americans without health insurance.  This is the whole point, right?  That's a tragedy!  We can't have that, we must give complete coverage to those 45 million people, or our entire health care system is a failure!  Right?  That's basically the Democrat argument.  My argument is that the health care system in this country does not need a top-to-bottom overhaul...  it needs fine tuning.  It needs rational people taking a look at the real needs.  People who do not have an agenda to grow the size of government to nauseating extents.  I will say that this is one thing the Republicans haven't offered --  an alternative.  Republicans have been fighting this legislation, and rightfully so...  but they need to offer a different way of doing things, or not many people will listen to them.

I say the 45 million is a total BS number.  I say not everyone in this country needs the type of health care proposed in the legislation.  I say not everyone in this country even WANTS that health care.  I say there are ways of maximizing people covered under insurance plans without involving a mammoth bureaucracy that will likely decrease the quality of care across the board...

I will back up these statements with strong arguments and perspectives, as well as address the premise of "coverage for all" in a second post in the near future.  I do make an effort, believe it or not, to make my posts a tolerable length, and will therefore respect the time and convenience of the reader by continuing at a later time.  So much to say, and so little time.

Cheers,

- Jay

Oooooooohhh.....this one can go on and on and on.....but, speaking as someone who has grown up with a state health care system both at home and where I chose to live now, I don't know any different.  I can only defend what I know and what I experience, what my family and my loved ones have experienced and how it has treated us.  I'm only going to say how we experience it over here, and the more I know and learn about the American way of life, the more I realise that we see things very differently.

But, I have been bringing my stuff to the table since I did my first day of "legal" paid work at 16 and that was brought to the table in the shape of my taxes that I pay regularly as clockwork, every month in my pay packet.  Whether I'm paying it to the state (and getting a better deal cause hey, they buy health care in bulk) or paying it into a private health plan like you do (or most of you do), what difference does it make?  Sure, it's not perfect, but from what I see, your system aint perfect either.

I can see your point on your fears about "free loaders" etc etc and the "culture of welfare", but they are always going to be there, in one shape or form, sucking us all dry one way or another. They already are.  But I, personally, deal with my own little world and try not to worry about those who cheat the system.  You will drive yourself crazy if you start to worry about that.

I'm in no way saying you should turn to state health care, not because it doesn't work, because it does, but purely because the american way of thinking just isn't tuned that way.  No-one is right or wrong in this arguement, and I honestly doubt OB will get his statehealth care,  but I like what we have here, and I wouldn't  change it for the world.

Thanks for a great post Jay..!

Hmmm...... I suppose the one point we diverge on the most is the notion of fine tuning vs. complete overhaul..... I personally think that the time for fine tuning has come and gone without being taken seriously, so now its time for some more drastic measures to be taken.

I personally wouldn't say that most liberals doesn't use logic, I'd simply say their concerns and plans are geared towards different things than most conservatives... By the same token I wouldn't say every republican is a completely self absorbed hipocrite, but the bad apples do tend to spoil the harvest and stand out more..... I do think in a way mark has a point though.... I mean after 8 years of crap the flood gates are now open.... There is a bit of a mad dash going on to make up for lost time and perhaps the best choices aren't being made across the board.... I don't think anyone that voted for Obama thought he would be perfect and as any human being, he's not going to be. With that in mind though, at least the issue is finally getting the attention it truely deserves and at least SOMETHING is finally getting done. Sides, odds are when the wind changes again, things will even themselves out and perhaps this legislation takes that into account. I'd almost bet on the notion. Consider when you haggle over the price of a car, you don't immediately offer your highest price to purchase a vehicle and the seller doesn't offer his lowest... Same type of things go on in congress all the time... I suppose the truely saddest notion of all is that the democrats, as usual, can't get their ducks in a row and iron things out cohesively. Then again, having competing ideas is ultimately a good thing, long as it doesn't just drown out the action phase.

Also, after watching the news and checking online, there really aren't any black and white details of this healthcare plan out there... There are plenty of people's opinions and not a whole lot on the exact wording of the plan.... So, less someone has an exact copy of the bill being passed, I guess everything up to this point is nothing more than heresay.

Bush and Cheney are dictators, Obama is a communist. Put it to rest, all of you.

07/21/2009 23:00:09
but it's so dumb they freaking brought impeachment charges against clinton for lying about an affair but they don't impeach bush for lying about starting a war. I m just saying, no one in congress has the guts to do the right thing anymore.

All war is wrong. The War Veterans come home and can't get the care they need or deserve. That's the fault of the members of congress and the senate.

Let's see.....War.....Healthcare...yeah, that's relevent.

And um...read the news on our bomb dropping/PLOWING going on at the orders of your good buddy, Obama today??

I won't get over the loss of thousands of troops or thousands of innocent civilians just cause Bush had to finish daddy's war. Bush ruined our reputation in the world as well. It's sick what he got away with in the white house.

LOL, Jay...did you expect ANY less from Mark? Really?

You ALREADY know my stance on this, it's insanity and will close more small businesses than one can even imagine! Sure everybody "has the 'RIGHT'" to basic healthcare, but at WHAT cost to the rest of us? I'm NOT okay with giving even MORE of my hard earned (and MUCH needed) pay to taxes for people that don't care to get up and do things the RIGHT way. I too am a single mother, I too do not have child support coming in, I TOO could be sitting on my rear complaining about the position I've put my life into, BUT...I WORK. I have self respect and PRIDE. I've gone WITHOUT health insurance and when the time came that I needed to seek care, I PAID out of pocket for that care. I cannot IMAGINE just taking, taking more and then more after that, while bringing NOTHING to the table in return...other than the very breath I breathe. This is just absurd, honestly.

Needless to say, I do NOT agree with this plan, in the slightest.

07/21/2009 22:02:04
i didn't say that, did i, mark?  i said not everybody NEEDS or WANTS the type of health care obama is proposing, and said i would explain at a later time.  nice job of extrapolating and putting words in my mouth.
