A good friend of mine introduced me to anime about for years ago and I have loved it ever since. My avatar is an anime character called Yoko from an anime called Twelve Kingdoms who back in our world is judged negatively for her red hair but she likes hersle the way she is.
I could name quite a few who strut red locks in the anime world. My taste in Asian animation is very selective, but I have been a fan since the 80's (when I first watched Akira...like so many others).
The one that comes to mind...the one that stands out so greatly is Project A-KO. There were a few OAVs released, but the thing that immediately moves A-KO to the forefront is just the insane humour and mixing of genres. If you like comedy, of course, Ranma 1/2 --in female form, a fiery redhead. Bubblegum Crisis, Cutey Honey, Gall Force, Slayers, Angel Sanctuary, Beast City, Curse of the Undead Yoma... Usually I stick to horror, and the occassional school drama, if it's daring and angsty enough. I believe that in Vampire Princess Miyu her best friend is a redhead.
There is a red in Demon City Shinjuku (though I could be mistaken on this one, also...*thinks deeply*), which is one of my favourite horrors animations --happening to be in the vain of Wicked City. Also, check out Golgo 13: Queen Bee. But then again, it's been so long since watching them, and they all seem to just blend together. I would like to say, however, that redheads tend to be regarded as demons and seducers in horror anime, moreso than those with other hair colours.
Correct me if I'm wrong about the presence of redheads in the few animes mentioned, because...like I said, it's been a long time. Blondes are definitely sighted more often. I don't usually look for redheads, but they are common in certain genres, particularly comedy and horror. (It would seem the same would ring true for Hollywood movies, eh?)

If you want to get on the topic of old school, what about Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka? That's retro. Speedracer is vintage. But yes, Gigantor is ALMOST as old as Astro Boy...same retro feel.
Honestly, I would much rather watch the Godzilla and Gamera films than sit through that artifact anime. I prefer vintage American animation.

The best anime stars a redhead. Outlaw Star's future retro hero Gene Starwind! In the precursor manga to this the hero also has red hair and later on when Gene meets one of the characters who knew the original hero (I forget his name right now) he remarks "You show up here with that abomination and red hair to boot" referencing the weapon he carries.
Not too often to you see redheads as a hero outside of CSI:Miami so you should definitely check out Outlaw Star.

Welcome to the future.
