Shuttle overflight
Posted On 05/31/2008 17:08:44 by PhillipS1961
Tonight we (in England) were treated to a rare sight, just after 10.00 PM local, the space shuttle lifted of from Kennedy Space centre, en route to a rendesvous with the ISS. Now normally the shuttle flights are either during daylight or late evening, where it is either to bright or to dark to see the overflights - but tonight it was different, sunset happened at the right time to light the underside of the shuttle when it flew over the south west of England. I was out in my garden just after the launch hoping to see the shuttle pass, shure enough, at 2215, I saw two bright dots (shuttle and external tank) heading slightly south of east chasing the space station. This is a first for me, I'd known about the shuttle overflying Britain, but never seen. All in all a nice experience.

Wow, Awesome! I would have LOVED to have seen that!

It was quite fortunate that you managed to see it, if that is going to be the last one, we are likely to come across with in the near future.

That's SO cool; I've never seen anything like that!

I've heard about the way shuttle launches are celebrated in Florida :) and also, NASA are realising they will have no heavy lift capability for 5 years. So they want to extend the shuttle fleet life span by as long as possible, though I can't see where the funding will come from.

In Florida the whole neighborhood gets together on their roofs or the beach to watch them, they are big and bright here and they amaze even the people who have been watching them for years. You are more lucky then you realize as that was one of the last few Space Shuttle flights. NASA will shut down the whole Space Shuttle program in 2010 to make room for the Constellation program, which is developing the next-generation vehicle and rockets to go to the moon and later to Mars. Constellation is not scheduled to begin flights until 2015. I hope you made a wish!
